What's in a Name?

I've seen the Crush Meme that shows up periodically. I've read some commentary on LJF pages about having crushes on someone. Had to pause; the whole crush thing, when I was growing up, proved rather... uncomfortable, painful, and preferably avoidable. Probably because I was the proverbial Nerd Geek with slide-rule and pocket protector.

No, really.

Still, I usually am willing to examine or re-examine things. After all, it's part of Nursing Process: Gather Data, Assess, Plan, Implement, Gather Data, Re-assess. Maybe I need to re-think this business about having a crush on someone.

Or maybe I just need sleep. Sleep sounds good.

Yeah, on the whole, I'm grateful not to have crushes, other than a few cheerful and purely recreational lusts. Crushes make my brain hurt and almost invariably end with my feeling bad.

You know what was amazing to me? When I decided that crushes were really too painful and definitely unproductive (as it were) and started focusing on friendships... you know, like people as people...

well, er, you see, um, other things started happening.

I was, like, Doh!

I've always viewed Boyz as friends. Comes of being the only girl in my extended family and living in a neighborhood that was short on girls. My 2nd-best friend in grade school was a boy, which totally confused my mother. I always viewed my crushes as unrealistic exercises that had almost nothing to do with my real relationships.

Although once in a while I'd ask out someone I had a crush on, or someone on whom I had a crush would turn out to have one on me, and then all kinds of mayhem would ensue until the crushy part of things died down and we could get on to figuring out what kind of relationship we wanted to have.

It's not that I don't like mind-blanking passion...but in the long term, I don't like walking around with a blank mind, and I find friendships more satisfying in the long run...possibly because my idea of friendship (under the right circumstances, in the right time, with the right agreements, with the right set of attachments/lack of same etc. etc.) does not preclude occasional mind-blowing passion.
